The Challenge

Go Electric Inc., an energy solutions specialist in microgrids for commercial and industrial customers acquired by Saft in 2019, was working on a microgrid solution for a large semi-truck service center in Indianapolis that houses over 60 service bays and offers semi-truck sales, parts, and repair services.

The microgrid had a unique setup with a LYNC SECURE 750kW/1 MWh energy storage system, two inverters tied to two separate meters, and a 250kW PV array for one and 500kW PV array for the other. One meter was on AES Indiana’s SL rate tariff, which included high demand charges for power servicewhile the other meter was on the SH rate tariff that included high energy charges for space heating. The microgrid already utilized ETB Monitor to oversee system operations and performance but needed behind-the-meter controls system capable of integrating with the unique microgrid design and using a single battery block to optimize the two separate meters for resiliency and rate savings.

The Solution

Go Electric Inc. relied on Energy Toolbase to configure and optimize a custom software solution for this unique project. Energy Toolbase integrated the battery with their behind-the-meter energy management system: ETB Controller with Acumen AI™. The solution involved creating a way to share and partition the battery block between the two inverters, each tied to a separate meter and PV system. This partition allows each inverter to draw from the same battery bank and optimize their respective meter for resiliency and rate savings. This custom solution was engineered to ensure that the battery’s operations are maximized for both meters simultaneously. This project showcases ETB Controller’s ability to integrate and work with third-party equipment and adjust to different market needs.
